Community Benefit Philosophy

Family Life Services Center operates for the benefit of the Greater Ann Arbor | Ypsilanti Communities.
The Board and staff are committed to building “communities of healing and hope by compassionately responding to human need in the spirit of Jesus Christ.”

Our mission and values of respect, integrity, stewardship, and excellence call us to provide quality health care services to the people served by our ministries, “with a special concern for those who are poor or vulnerable.”  The biblical mandate requires us to express this in concrete action at all levels of interaction with our community and prompts us to work to ensure that our support system provides adequate care for the pregnant woman.

In accord with its mission, Family Life Services should distinguish itself by service to and advocacy for those people whose social condition puts them at the margins of our society and makes them particularly vulnerable to poverty and abortion.

In addition to our ministry identity, Family Life Services is a not-for-profit, tax-exempt, charitable organization. We have a legal responsibility to not only provide pregnancy services within the walls of our clinic but also to “give back” to the people in the communities we serve who invest in FLS in the form of donations and volunteer hours. Our community benefit initiatives show that we are good stewards of our resources on behalf of our communities and a force for positive change within our communities.

Community Benefit Defined

Family Life Services defines community benefit as a planned, managed, organized, and measurable approach to the organization’s participation in meeting identified community pregnancy needs. It implies collaboration with a “community” to “benefit” its residents – particularly the poor, minorities, and other underserved groups – by improving health status and quality of life.

Guiding Principles

This Community Benefit Philosophy will guide the development and administration of policies, procedures and programs by using the following interconnected principles.

Principle #1: Ministry Identity

Consistent with the missions of Family Life Services, Family Life Services will distinguish itself by service to and advocacy for those people whose social condition puts them at the margins of our society and makes them particularly vulnerable to discrimination.

Principle #2: Addressing Needs

We will develop programs and/or interventions that address identified and documented unmet disproportionate pregnancy support needs of the population we serve in the walls of this ministry that improve the overall health of the community.

Principle #3: Internal Collaboration

Family Life Services ministries will collaborate both internally and across the continuum of pregnancy care, maximizing our stewardship of resources and talent, minimizing duplication of effort to effectively impact the health of populations entrusted to our care.

Principle #4: Continuous Improvement

In alignment with our continuous improvement process and commitment to excellence, each program will include 1) identification and documentation of need 2) outcome measurement and 3) an on-going program evaluation process to assure that community benefit programs return the optimal value to the community.

Principle #5: Improved Access

Our community benefit efforts will focus on providing creative solutions to improve access to pregnancy care both locally and systemically which includes on-going, comprehensive and preventative pregnancy services.

Principle #6: Strategic Planning

All community benefit initiatives will be an integral component of the Family Life Services Center and local ministry integrated strategic and financial plans, inclusive of budgeting to provide financial and human resources (in partnership with other community stakeholders when appropriate) adequate for successful program implementation.

Principle #7: Governance

Family Life Services Center’s local ministry board will provide direction and oversight in the community benefit planning, reporting, and evaluation processes.

Principle #8: Senior Leadership

Senior Leaders will be the community benefit champions at each mission service location and be held accountable for outcomes that improve the health of the community.

Principle #9: Diversity

All community benefit initiatives will reflect cultural sensitivity and competence, honoring the diversity of cultures and traditions in the communities we serve.

Principle #10: Standardization

Policies and procedures will be standardized across the system whenever practical and in the mutual best interests of our clients, our communities, and our ministry.

System-wide policies and practices will be:

  • established and consistently applied in all Family Life Services ministry.
  • simple to understand and administer.
  • effectively and consistently communicated.


FLS’s Community Benefit Philosophy will be administered by policies aligned with the above Principles #1 – 10. Management will report to the Board regularly regarding the implementation of system-wide policies and practices, consistent with this stated Philosophy, to ensure that the intended principles are fulfilled.
